How to Complete Part 1 (Background) of the NEBOSH IG2 Risk Assessment

When you're preparing the IG2 report for your NEBOSH International General Certificate, the Background section is your starting point. This section is essential as it sets the stage for the rest of your risk assessment. Think of it as the foundation of your report; if this part is weak, the entire assessment could be misinterpreted. Here’s how to approach it:

NEBOSH IGC | Part 1 of NEBOSH 1G2 Risk Assessment

1. Name of the Organisation

Start by entering the name of the organization where you conducted the risk assessment. If confidentiality is a concern, you can invent a false name. However, all other information you provide must be accurate and truthful. Choosing a site you are familiar with is crucial. Ideally, select a site you have visited frequently and have a thorough understanding of its operations, as this will help you identify and assess hazards more effectively.

Criteria for NAME of the Organisation.

  • Choose the name of organisation for the preparation of NEBOSH IG2 Risk Assessment Carefully.
  • If you ever have worked in any organisation, choose that organisation for Risk Assessment Report only. If not, select any other industry or organisation for which you can easily gain knowledge and information.
  • Write exact name of the company
  • Do not write just name of the industry i.e Construction. You must have to write the exact name such as ARABIAN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY PVT LTD.
  • The Name of organisation can be imaginary and false.
  • The information and knowledge of the organisation or industry, that you will write in the risk assessment must be relevant to the organisation you have choose only.

For Example [Queta Cafe] [Armaan Builders] [Arabian Construction Company Pvt Ltd] etc

2. Site Location

Next, you need to specify the location of the site. Again, if confidentiality is an issue, you can use a fictional location. However, remember that this location should align with the activities and hazards you will discuss later in your report. The site location helps the reader visualize the environment you’re assessing, so it should be described in a way that supports the findings you will present.

The best format for describing a site location in your NEBOSH IG2 report includes the company name (if not confidential), street address, city, region, and country, ensuring clarity and context for the assessment.

Criteria for Site Location:

  1. Write Street name/Road name First.
  2. Then, write Main area/ Locality.
  3. Then Write the name of City.
  4. Then write the name of Country.
Street/road, Locality, City, Country.

For example:

[6th road main bazaar Rawalpindi Pakistan]

3. Number of Workers

The number of workers at the site is an important detail. This figure helps contextualise the scale of the operations and the potential exposure to risks. For your report, you can specify any number of workers between 112 and a higher number, depending on the size of the organization. This figure should include all personnel who may be exposed to the hazards identified in your assessment, including both full-time staff and temporary workers.

Criteria for Number of Workers:

  • Do not write round figures. i.e 600,100 etc
  • Write 180,150,550 instead.
  • If your risk assessment is based on projects, than first write the total number of workers working in the whole organisation, and then write the number of workers working in a project.

For Example:

255

4. General Description of the Organisation

This is where you describe the organization in more detail. Include information about the industry it operates in, the types of products or services it provides, and any other relevant details. The description should be clear and concise, giving the reader a solid understanding of the nature of the business. This understanding is crucial as it helps frame the risk assessment in the context of the organization’s activities. Also add shift patterns if exist.

In this section, you should describe the specific area of the site where your risk assessment is focused. This is a critical part of the background because it directly links to the next section of your report, where you will identify hazards. For example, if you are assessing a manufacturing plant, you might describe the production floor, storage areas, and maintenance workshops. Make sure to include all the areas where you will be identifying hazards in Section 2, as this ensures consistency throughout your report.
