What is IG1 and IG2 in NEBOSH IGC?

If you have read my
previous blog post of (What is NEBOSH IGC), I have discussed in it that NEBOSH
IGC consists of two Units IG1 and IG2.
In this article we are
going to discuss the Unit IG1 thoroughly.
So let's get into it:
What is IG1 Unit of NEBOSH IGC?
IG1 is the first unit of
NEBOSH International General Certificate course. It is also called Management
of Health and Safety. IG1 covers a detailed knowledge about management of
health and safety. Learners get a detailed knowledge and skills that are required
to make a safest working environment. IG1 contains the knowledge about the
importance of effectively managing safety at workplace to prevent accidents,
injury and other Health and safety related issues. IG1 study material provides
the knowledge of identifying hazards and to mitigate risk using appropriate
control measures to learners. It also make's student familiar with the laws and
legislation of occupational safety and health such as significance of legal
compliance, ILO Conventions and Recommendations and consequences of
non-compliance. It also allows learners to know systematic approach of Health
and Safety management system such as policy making, implementation, monitoring
and review.
Overall NEBOSH IG1
syllabus covers a detailed and deeper exploration of knowledge which is applied
on special areas of health and safety.
Elements of IG1:
- Element #1: Why we should manage workplace safety and health.
- Element #2: How health and safety management system works and how they look like.
- Element #3: Managing Risk- Understanding people and process.
- Element#4: Monitoring and measuring health and safety management system.
Elements 01: Why we should manage workplace safety and health:
This elements consists of Moral, legal and financial reasons of why it is important to manage workplace safety and health. It also consists of consequences of failure in managing health and safety at workplace for organisation.
Element 02: How health and safety management system works and how they look like:
This element emphasis's the key components of Health and safety management system. It will cover the role of policy and approach of organisation in making arrangements for health and safety.
Element 03: Managing Risk - Understanding People and Processes:
Element 3 of IG1 covers the discussion about the process and procedures to manage risks by making proper risk assessments. It will also include the understanding of human factor and behaviour regarding health and safety culture.
Element 04: Health and safety monitoring and measuring:
This element of IG1 will provide learners knowledge about how to monitor the effectiveness of a health and safety management system. Learners will learn about leading and lagging indicators, accident incident investigation, checking health and safety performance, auditing etc
Assessment method of IG1:
IG1 exam is assessed by a Open Book Exam (OBE). Which means that the candidate have 24 hours to complete this exam. a detailed article about (OBE) is published Click here on (Open Book Exam) to read about OBE.
Passing Ratio of IG1:
IG1 consists of 100 marks in Total and a candidate have to obtain 45 marks out of 100 to pass this unit otherwise it will be referred.
Why IG1 is important?
Clearing IG1 is essential for everyone who is looking for a successful career in HSE field because it provides a detail and important knowledge regarding health and safety. By going through IG1, learners will be able to apply knowledge on workplace to manage health and safety management system effectively.
